It is in the northern section of Pickens County, South Carolina. The state park houses the tallest mountain totally within the state, Pinnacle Mountain.

History

The park was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC). The park's land came from donations in 1935 by Pickens County and the city of Greenville who donated a total of . More land came through purchases from various landowners and a donation from Elizabeth Ellison brought the total acreage of the property up to the present.
